Shih-Tzu means Lion Dog in Mandarin. Shih-Tzus are descended from Lhasa Apsos bred with Pekingese. Paintings of dogs resembling Shih-Tzus exist dating back to the sixteenth century. Shih-Tzus were popular with Chinese royalty. Chinese did not allow Shih-Tzus out of the country until the 1930s.
