Rescue Me ID: 14-09-25-00033Jewel (female)

Shih Tzu    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected,
 Fearful/Anxious

Meet Jewel a 3-5 year old purebred Shih Tzu who has had one heck of a life up until her recent rescue (about 6 weeks ago.) Jewel was used at a puppy mill as a breeding mom for the entirety of her life so far. If you don't know what a puppy mill is, please google it and spread the word! She was caged 24 hours a day, in her own feces and urine and bred from her first head cycle constantly for 3-5 years. During that time she could have produced up to 2 litters a year. These 'breeders' then take the puppies away as early as 4 weeks old (when they should not be taken from their mother until 8-10 weeks), and sell them to pet stores and online. ... (Read More)They ship the puppies site unseen so that most people don't know how inhumane they are to the parents. Please never buy a puppy from a pet store or from a website that ships and spay/neuter your pets so these people go out of business! Now back to Jewel. She is a very shy girl who is very hesitant to approach people. She prefers to relax in her dog house, but is quiet and relaxed most of the time. She is unsure what a couch is and does not like to be caught or handled (understandably so!) As stated above she has not had much human interaction other than for us to administer medication to her ruptured eye. She is very timid and shy, and gets confused when she is picked up so she will need someone very special to take her on and show her that humans can really show love and compassion! We are unsure how she would do with children, but we feel her ideal environment would be with an older couple who have a stable quiet environment where she can relax and learn to trust. Is the Shih Tzu breed a good fit for you? Highlights Shih Tzus are difficult to housebreak. Be consistent, and do not allow a puppy to roam the house unsupervised until he is completely trained. Crate training is helpful. The flat shape of the Shih Tzu's face makes him susceptible to heat stroke, because the air going into the lungs isn't cooled as efficiently as it is among longer-nosed breeds. He should be kept indoors in air-conditioning rooms during hot weather. Be prepared to brush and comb the Shih Tzu coat every day. It mats easily. While Shih Tzus are trustworthy with children, they're not the best choice for families with toddlers or very young children because their small size puts them at risk for unintentional injury. The Shih Tzu tends to wheeze and snore, and can be prone to dental problems. While all dogs eat their own or other animals' feces (coprophagia), the Shih Tzu seems especially prone to this behavior. The best way to handle the problem is never let it become a habit. Watch your Shih Tzu closely and clean up poop right away. To get a healthy pet, never buy a puppy from a backyard breeder, puppy mill, or pet store. Find a reputable breeder who tests her breeding dogs for genetic health conditions and good temperaments. If you would like to meet Jewel please email and schedule a meet n greet. She is UTD on shots and has been spayed and micro-shipped. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-08-31-00348Mickey & Miley (male)

Shih Tzu    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Desperately looking to have someone adopt these 2 adorable AKC registered Shih Tzu's to a good loving home as soon as possible! Mickey (Male, Black and white shih tzu) is 3 1/2 yrs. old and Miley (Female , Brown shih tzu) is 3 1/2 yrs old as well. They are obedient and great with adults and children! They all have their shots and are potty trained... Male shih tzu is neutered and microchipped but Female shih tzu is not spayed.. I recently just had a baby and unfortunately, I do not have the time and energy I used to have for them. I love them dearly and will miss them but they need to be with someone that has the time to give them a lot of ... (Read More)attention and care from a new owner. They are really sweet adorable dogs and they just love to be around people! I would prefer if both dogs stay together as a couple since they have been together since they were puppies. I don't want them to suffer from separation anxiety. They also got used to having a lot of room to exercise and play. Also, I will provide a crate, their leashes, dog toys and any remaining dog food and treats for you to take with them. In the pics I have posted, Miley and Mickey just got groomed and their hair is shorter than normal because of the summer. But normally they are very fluffy. I have pics of them as puppies and also with their hair longer if you are interested in seeing them... Please contact me if you are interested and I will contact you as soon as I can.. Thanks so much :-) (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-08-30-00269Gracie (female)

Shih Tzu Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current, Deaf

Gracie was surrendered to us in the most neglected condition we have ever seen. She was flea and parasite invested, she has cataracts in both eyes, untreated ear infections that were so bad that she has lost her hearing, a grade 4 heart murmur, a wound on her leg that needed surgery and a foxtail had dug its way into her skin that needed a surgery too. All that said, we have healed her now and she is a new dog! This sweet little girl needs a home where she can live out her golden years. We think she would make a really great company for a senior citizen, who would like the company of a little dog without a long term commitment. We ... (Read More)believe Gracie is about 8 since her teeth are in good condition, but due to her neglect she has aged beyond her years. That said she has just recovered from two surgeries, so she could still regain some of her youth. Gracie does not require much. She likes to go for slow walks and snuggle by your side. She uses pee pads, so you can take her outside or just change her pads. Lately, she has been communicating her desire to go outside, so this is big progress. She is very sweet natured and will make a great companion animal. All we want for Gracie is to feel loved for once in her life. Her life was miserable and she deserves so much better. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-08-29-00603Gilbert (male)

Shih Tzu Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered

Darling 1.5yo Small Male ShiChi Rescued From High Kill Shelter. Gilbert is a small 9lb black and white mix of Shih Tzu and Chihuahua who is a year and a half old. He is extremely cuddly and loving and was raised with small children. He is NOT good with other animals although he's gotten better about our cat since coming here. I would not trust him with small animals as he is way too interested in them. Gilbert walks well on a leash and is crate trained. He is relearning house manners after living outside for several months. He will need a home willing to continue to work on his housetraining but I believe he will do much better after he ... (Read More)leaves my home because we have had LOTS of foster dogs here over the years and marking is just his way of trying to cover up previous accidents. He's good about wearing a belly band though so that takes his ability to actually pee out of the equation but still having him 100% housebroken so he doesn't have to wear it is the goal. Gilbert was neglected in his previous home and was regulated to living outdoors in harsh weather after the family moved in with other family members who did not want a dog in the house. He was living with his brother but after 2 months of fostering them we have determined that separating them is probably best because working with 2 youngsters who need consistent training is hard work plus they fight for attention and with each other over food and toys. It just seems to make sense. Gilbert is neutered and fully vaccinated. He's a soft little lap boy who loves to snuggle. He is playful but pretty low energy. He's filled out a ton in the 2 months we have had him as he no longer has worms and he's on a good diet of Wellness dog food now. He's good about having his nails trimmed and being brushed. He has an easy care coat. He's just a nice little dog down on his luck who needs someone who will love him like he'd liked to love them. (Less)
