Rescue Me ID: 16-07-13-00114Sweetie (female)

Shih Tzu Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sweetie Conklin was born about May 30, 2011 and weighs about 18 lbs. She's a gorgeous mix of browns and grey and will be so very pretty once she is groomed properly. She is a sweet girl that is getting alone with the other dogs beautifully. She is alert and happy and just major sweetness - she adores her humans and follows her foster mom everywhere. She looks Shih Tzu like but where that pointy little nose comes from we are not sure. Sweetie does have a mature cataract in one eye that is quiet at this time meaning there is no pain or inflammation. It may become inflamed in the future and need meds or surgery. Her other eye is fine. ... (Read More)This is all we know so far as no information comes from the south because they have such a short time span to find a new home that information doesn't always matter - how sad. We sure are glad this happy girl made the journey to the safety of the north! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-06-17-00176DeliPickles (female)

Shih Tzu    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Please give our adorable problem child a home! We adopted Deli a few years ago from a rescue group, as a companion for our older YorkiePoo who had recently lost his best buddy. Although they didn't hit it off, she bonded with my husband immediately and we decided to keep her. History & Issues -- Deli was found wandering the streets of Schenectady at the estimated age of 4 mos. We're sure this contributes to her conflicted behavior with strangers .. she sometimes growls but more often wags her tail and wants to be petted... If greeted too enthusiastically she'll cower and rarely, may nip. So some fear aggression. As she matured, she became ... (Read More)quite aggressive towards small children. She was wonderful with our infant granddaughter but as she became mobile, Deli began to exhibit very dominant aggressive behavior. ABSOLUTELY NO SMALL CHILDREN. She's fine with our teenage nephews. Although she loves to cuddle she also becomes quite bossy if allowed too much 'power' We always allowed our pets on the couch and bed but Deli assumes a dominant role if she's given the opportunity. We have found it necessary to be very clear about her place in the family and had been advised by a trainer to not allow her on furniture and it has made a big difference. Unfortunately the two dogs have gone from relatively peaceful coexistence to frequent fights for dominance and we fear our older, smaller Yorkie is suffering from anxiety and could also be hurt. We also have a number of small children that frequent our home. The Good -- Sociable, Obedient, 99% House Broken (Uses peepee pads inside at night & has been known to have an accident or two) Super-Cute, Affectionate & Playful (see youtube video) Loves her 'people' Health & Diet -- Deli came to us with bladder stones, which we had addressed. She's prone to bladder infections but if kept on a strict diet, she's fine. She eats Royal Canin, Urinary dry food. Gets pureed pumpkin for a treat and some extra fiber. She has a typical Shih Tzu coat. We have her groomed about every 6 wks. If not, her eyes get very weepy. We are heartbroken but recognize that our home has become unsuitable for Deli -- she's isolated whenever the kids are around and now the fighting with our senior pup has made it very unpleasant for all involved. We know that this 'mostly' sweet girl will thrive in the right environment and hope there's an adult only home out there with the time and experience to meet her unique needs. (Less)

Shih Tzu    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Just Released From a Puppy Mill! Lilac was born about March 9, 2008 and weighs about 18 lbs. She is just adorable and was wonderful while we were handling her for vaccines and photos. Although this girl has lived her life in a cage birthing puppies for pet store shelves she is quite social and we feel she should turn around nicely and begin acting more like a normal dog, who had a normal life, in the near future. She will need house training as she has been in a cage 24/7 eating, sleeping, and going potty with the bottom of the cage being wire so the waste falls through to a tray. We have a lot of good information on our main website to ... (Read More)help you with turning around a mill dog. Please do a little reading before applying for this cutie as she will be a project for awhile and your response to her behavior is key in the speed at which she recovers from her past. She is wonderful with other dogs and most mill dogs do better with another normal dog in the house showing them the ropes! A mill dog can be a bit of work, but the moment that you see the look of love in their eyes it is the most rewarding feeling in the world!!!! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-03-29-00092Chloe (female)

Shih Tzu    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Very Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Chloe is a 16 year old, spayed female Shih Tzu who was surrendered to the Brooklyn ACC because her elderly owner is no longer well enough to care for her. Chloe weighs just under 12 lbs. She is both visually and hearing impaired but is able to navigate her new foster home without difficulty. Chloe is good with other dogs and her owner reported that she is respectful and gentle with everyone she meets. Chloe gets more loving by the day. She will only be adopted to the perfect home and if that doesn't come available she will remain where she is in our forever foster program. She has had a recent check up and she is doing very well. ... (Read More)Chloe has seen our vet where she had senior lab work and a dentistry. She is now most adorably toothless but has no problem eating soft food and has a great appetite. She is up to date with her vaccines and is microchipped. Chloe needs a special adopter who will give her a second chance to find a loving home. (Less)
