Rescue Me ID: 16-12-27-00042Jitney (female)
My Life Was Spent in a Puppy Mill! Jitney was born about August 16, 2010 and weighs about 16 lbs. She has spent her life in a cage in a puppy mill and is so excited, and amazed, to walk on grass! She is having a blast here and loves the other dogs. A puppy mill dog often does better with another dog in his next life - a normal dog. The normal dog will teach the puppy mill dog how to act in the world. As far as puppy mill fear goes this girl is minor. When we try to pick her up she will run, but otherwise is very comfortable with us, she looks at us dances and wiggles. We want to mention that these small dogs often do better with a potty floor pad available and if you are interested in rescuing a mill dog we'd like to have you go to our website and read the 'Working with Mill Dog Notes'. www.joyfulrescues.org This little cutie has had her first dental, but the mill dogs teeth are SO bad when they come in that another one may be needed in the near future. Adopting a mill dog is a special kindness as it will take many weeks, months or, even, years before the dog truly shows love toward you. But, when that moment happens you see it in their eyes and it will take your breath away! We ADORE this little girl, she has blossomed!! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-11-27-00160Barkley (male)
Barkley was born about November 9, 2010 and weighs about 13 lbs. Barkley and four females came to us from a very bad situation in West Virginia. They were in extremely nasty living conditions, and one of the females, Queen Sheba, came to us pregnant because they were all locked in the same room with Barkley, so we now have four little surprise bundles whose lives were also saved as a result of this joint mission. Volunteers with ALIVE, a group for the humane treatment of animals in the area, were at the scene when State Police arrived and forced entry, and the five dogs were immediately placed in foster care. Their foster mom knew that we often help their county shelter by pulling dogs, and she was thrilled when we told her we'd get them transported that weekend, tend to their veterinary care, and find them loving forever homes! This entire group of dogs are sweeties, never nippy, a bit shy at first probably due to all the changes in their lives so quickly, and they are wiggly, happy, and majorly cute! Due to their circumstances we have no clue of their level of house training and often these tiny dogs struggle throughout their lives and potty floor pads may need to be in their future. We do want to be clear that all these dogs DO shed. Truly, these dogs should go to a home with another dog buddy as they've always had a dog buddy in the past. Also, most of them came in with hair loss and bacterial infections of the skin from the environment and fleas. They are healing, it will take time. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-09-27-00565Coco (female)
Coco is perfection in so many ways. She has the most beautiful personality and lots of love to give. She is a 1o year old shih Tzu poodle mix. Coco is great with everyone including dogs and children. Cats are not known as far as living together however. Coco has health issues which her new family will have to know about. Coco is diabetic and until we took her in the family didn't buy her insulin which the vet recommended she needed to lead a healthy life. We have now put her on the medication and she is doing well. Coco has dental disease and she ill be having a full dental. She also had mammary tumors which we had removed and we are super happy to say they were not cancerous. She was spayed at the time of surgery as well. Within a few weeks Coco will be ready for a family of her own. Insulin shots are very easy for most dogs. She is good for them and as she trusts her care taker the insulin injections after her meals becomes part of a routine. She is so easy going. We are checking her from head to toe. We will share her complete history with her potential adopters. Long Island adopter only. Newbeginningresq@aol.com for more info (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-08-13-00192Emma (female)
Beautiful loving 'people puppy'. Very frightened of and therefore aggressive to other dogs but extremely loving and submissive to people. We feel it's not fair to keep her in a home with a toddler who frightens her all day and it's not fair to the toddler who is being nipped in defense. Emma would thrive in a single pet household with no children and needs to be rescued from this situation : (

Shih Tzu Dogs can make good pets in New York if they match your IifestyIe. The Shih-Tzu is a toy breed similar to the Pekingese. Shih-Tzus are proud little dogs and loaded with personality. Shih-Tzus are gentle and do fine with children who are taught to respect the dogs. Shih-Tzus bark to announce people approaching their homes. Shih-Tzus need early obedience training and may require patience when housebreaking. A Shih-Tzu will do just fine in an apartment if it gets enough exercise.
